Title:  Materials Transformations and Dynamic Phenomena at Solid-Liquid Interfaces

Bio: Dr. HaimeiZheng is a staff scientist in Materials Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. She is also an adjunct professor in Materials Science Department at University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Zheng earned her Ph.Dwith Prof. RamamoorthyRamesh and Prof. Lourdes Salamanca-Ribaat University of Maryland, College Park. She completed her Ph.Dresearch with Prof. Ramesh at UC Berkeley. Thereafter, she became a postdoc with Prof. Paul Alivisatosin Chemistry at UC Berkeley and jointly at National Center for Electron Microscopy of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Dr. Zheng currently researches physical and chemical processes of materials with a focus on materials transformations and dynamic phenomena at solid-liquid interfaces. Her primary approach is developing and applying in situliquid environmental electron microscopy. Dr. Zheng has about 90 publications with the total citations more than 10,150 times and an H index of 36. She received LBNL Director’s award for exceptional scientific achievements in 2013 and DOE Office of Science Early Career Award in 2011. More information is available at http://haimei.zheng.lbl.gov

Abstract: An understanding and ultimately controlling of the materials dynamic processes at solid-liquid interfaces is important for various applications including solution based synthesis, materials corrosion protection and energy conversion and storage devices. For the past a few years, my group has been studying materials dynamic phenomena by developing and applying liquid environmental electron microscopy. In this talk, I will first briefly show the revealing of nanocrystal growth in solution, including facet development during Pt nanocubegrowth and the imaging of two dimensional nanosheetformation by real time observation. Then, I will present in situstudy electrochemical processes using electrochemical liquid cells and X-ray spectroscopy. Dissolution-deposition at electrode-liquid electrolyte interfaces and phase transformations of the precipitates during charge cycles will be discussed. These studies provide insights on battery operation and failure mechanisms.
